• The SynTools Application Generator is used to develop application programs known as "knowledge bases" written in the Syntel™ Functional Programming Language.

  Knowledge Bases represent several things:

  • Expertise in a specific "domain" like finance or insurance. Syntel allows this expertise to be recorded in comprehensive ways:
    • Simple description of a value, presented as a screen label
    • Specification of default values
    • Precise functional specification of how calculated values are formed
    • Extensive (and possibly dynamic) clarification of the meaning and purpose of a value
    • Description of "alert" situations
    • Audit trail of modifications to the specification
  • Specification of business forms, to permit entry of necessary data and provide access to the underlying calculations
  • Description of external databases used in calculations
  • Description of external interface programs

• The Syntel Compiler prepares the knowledge base for the runtime environment. The same knowledge bases run on SynCore Server for Java, SynCore/2, and SynCore/1 with minor changes.

• The Syntel Interpreter (also known as the Inference Engine) executes the application program -- it makes the application "come alive", or, as a customer put it,";strut&";. Using the Knowledge Base, the Syntel Interpreter paints screens, computes values, accesses SQL reference tables, and communicates with external APPC transactions.

  The Interpreter is available in three versions:

  • A scalable Unix/NT-based CICS version (currently under development)
  • An OS/2 version
  • An MVS CICS-based version which can support hundreds of concurrent users

  In addition to distributing SynCore as an end-user application, our customers have also used the Interpreter as a transaction program. By building a transaction driver to assert necessary values and query required result values, SynCore can be connected to other computer software.

• The SynCore graphical user interface makes the application available on the user's desktop. When introduced back in 1985, the "business form" metaphor and the use of a mouse to access pop-up and pull-down menus were major innovations; they are now merely leading edge.

  SynCore Server for Java permits any intranet or Internet-attached client with Java capabilities to execute SynCore-based applications. With a Java-capable browser and pre-authorization from SyntelSoft, you can explore a demonstration knowledge base.

• The SynCore file cabinet is an SQL-based repository for business case (policy) data. Customer information is saved in a normalized, compact form, with careful steps taken to ensure data integrity. File Cabinets are currently in use with several hundred thousand business cases.

• SynCore's various components are a flexible basis for a sophisticated underwriting or scoring service. Syntel has been used to build a number of Underwriting Advisor knowledge bases encoding specific underwriting expertise.
